Weekly Shenanigans
I was asked by an old board member to write a letter of recommendation for them earlier this morning. I don't think it has hit me yet, that I'm not in school anymore. It feels like I'm just not going to class and hanging out at home watching my shows. However, since my internship with Editor and Publisher ended, I don't know what to do anymore. I guess I took the internship for granted because now, the job search struggle is real.
But back to the letter of rec; I've been writing it and it is really hard. Not only because of the fact that I didn't directly work with this member, but because of the tone of the letter. While I don't want to sound distant and leave it completely professional, I don't want the letter to be too casual either. And it's hard, because I was her friend first before being a fellow board member. I've been sitting here trying to write and edit this letter for the past couple of hours. Thank goodness it's not due until February though. I really want her to get this position, because it would mean a whole new set of experiences for her. I want her to let go and not be as shy anymore, and with this position, it's a must for her to open up to others.
Anyways, this past week was very exciting. Because KCN is still in debt, we still had to do TV tapings. And so on Friday, we had scheduled a TV taping for Whose Line Is It Anyway with me, Amy, Ave, Lydia and Emerline. I got to Amy's place around 12pm and we headed off to The Milk Shop where we bought a strawberry and red velvet ice cream macaron. We talked about life and jobs and such... depressing stuff, before heading off to The Grove. Walked around like two lost children before Amy got hungry and we went to the Farmer's Market to get some food. Amy then got a text from Emerline saying she couldn't make it because she was throwing up and really sick... so we had to find another person, FAST! Or else we wouldn't get paid for going to the taping, and it would have been useless. So we called all our friends, and thank the lord, Ave's friend Brandon was able to come to the taping with us. Phew~ Went to Dylan's Candy Bar because Amy wanted candy and then chilled at the local Barnes and Nobles for some free wifi. Around 3:30, we headed out to get to the studio. It was super stupid because we only had to go up a mountain to get to Studio City, but the traffic was crazy! There was only one road and the cars were just piling and it took us around 40 minutes to go 2 miles... But we still made it to the studio and the taping was super fun! It took around 5 hours.... but it was still fun, and we got a lot of inside jokes from it all. We were going to go out and eat with Ave and them, but I didn't feel too good and so we left. And am I glad we left when we did because I ended up getting a fever the next day, and so I had to rest and get well for Sunday!!
Because... Sunday was my little brother Sean's 18th birthday! Our aunt was in California due to work and so it was perfect timing for her to join us. Our whole family was starting to get sick... It all started with Sean, and then me, and then my grandma and grandpa, and finally my mom was also starting to lose her voice. So we were scared that our Aunt was going to get sick too, which was bad because she was technically here for work and needed to fly back to Hong Kong on Monday. For Sean's birthday dinner, we went to Outback Steakhouse on Sunday and dined on delicious steak! We got prime ribs, and NY steak strips with their famous Blooming Onion as an appetizer. Then the festivities came to an end as we ate the cake later at home. Our mom got the Strawberry Cream cake from Paris Baguette and everyone really liked the cream!
On Tuesday, it was Amy's birthday! Finally 23 years old. It's hard to believe that within me, Jasmine and Ave, Amy is the oldest... But the girls, Hiro, Eileen, Riley and Jenny got together in LA for a night out. First went to eat dinner at Plan Check on Fairfax! I got the Plan Check Burger cooked medium-well, and it was absolutely delicious. I think the ketchup/sauce was actually made like cheese, and because the heat from the patty melted it and the overall presentation and taste was great. Riley left early because she had to finish up a translating job, and so Eileen took her back to their apartment. Ended up going to Touhmi Izakaya at City Center, and Eileen joined us after taking Riley back. Ordered some 떡볶이 and 찌개, but the girl heard wrong and gave us fries instead. But she was nice enough to let us keep the fries. I still can't drink because of the liver problem, so I just sipped on some coke. Then we went to 노래방 at Chorus! We were there until 2am, and Jasmine even had work the next day!
Then on Wednesday, Ave picked me up and we went to go visit Amy in Irvine. Ate 자장면 and 탕수육 for lunch at some hole in the wall next to a 99 cent store called Mr. Chings. Then we deciding what to do next, and crazy ideas like skydiving and driving to Vegas came up. Ave was saying how we could go to Vegas and stil get back before 10pm! The most logical one was San Diego, and so because we're all unemployed and have nothing better to do with our lives, we drove to San Diego... Got to San Diego and got lost while trying to get to The Cliffs. Turns out it's right next to UCSD, so we backtracked and got to Scripps Coastal Reserve. It was really windy and cold, but we saw the biggest freaking mansion on the cliffs. Amy said that her friend said the owner of Rite-Aid (or some chain market) lives there. Decided to go visit Lydia, Ave's little sister, but she was still in class, and so we went to kill time at the local Bristol Farms. Ave bought some "specially charged electron" water... Lydia finished class, and so we headed to her place, but oh man, we did like 3 u-turns because we kept driving past the alley to get into the garage. Met her roommate, who turns out to be James' little sister?! Small world. It was getting near dinner-time, and so we decided to just drive to Phil's BBQ to get an early dinner and not get crowded during the dinner-time rush. However, when we got there, there was already a line forming. Ave and I shared the Baby Back Ribs and Chicken Dinner and Amy got the Baby Back Ribs small dinner. OH MAN. I've never had such good meat. I remember I wanted to take my family, but I had gone to the ballpark one instead. And the ballpark one only opens during games, and so we didn't get to try it. But next time I'll for sure bring them to the right place to try all this awesome meat. We were going to go for a round 3 at Taco's El Gordo, but we literally were still full from lunch... So we decided to just head back to Irvine. I didn't realize that from Irvine to and from San Diego is only 1.5 hours! Ave was pretty tired from driving all day, and so she took a nap in the UTC parking lot for an hour before driving and taking me home. Sean started to not feel good again, and turns out he has a fever but he still insisted on going to school the next day.
And today, Friday, is my Dad's birthday! We didn't do much today because my mom had to go to the Doctor's and my dad took her in the morning. They didn't get back until afternoon-ish because they went to buy some dishes for dinner and my dad's birthday cake! They came come with a Coffee cake and then my dad told me that he was going to be selling a lot of our old computers. So I started shifting through our old computers to uninstall and delete stuff. One computer was locked with a password, and no one knows what the password is... So I googled how to unlock it; unfortunately, the computer was already a bit haywire and so I can't even access safe mode! Because of Chinese tradition, we had noodles for dinner, which signify long-lasting life. Around 9pm, we ate the cake, and the coffee cream was really good! It wasn't sweet and it wasn't bitter, so it was good for my dad and grandma.
As much as I love hanging out with my friends, I need a job to support my spending habits. I can't go out and play with them unless I have the money to buy to buy food and gas! So the job hunt will continue. Hopefully, by the next update, I'll have heard some news from the places I've applied to.
